The Obama campaign is trying to get more students to vote in Virginia.
Admirable, right?
Wrong.
Students paying out-of-state tuition are being signed up by the Obama campaign to vote as state residents of Virginia.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia agrees.
“College students are in a unique situation…. They live in two places,” the organization’s executive director, Kent Willis, said. “The state law does not address that properly.”
“If homeless people have the right to vote by choosing their principal residence, college students ought to have the same right.”
Long said she’s now reviewing an application from a student from Savannah, Ga., who pays out-of-state tuition, is declared as a dependent in Georgia and has a Georgia driver’s license and car registration.
“What automatically makes these out-of-state students Virginians?” she asked.
If you pay out-of-state tuition you are not a resident of the state. Therefore you should not be able to vote in that state. There should be no option.
But the Obama campaign feels student should have the right to choose.
Naturally, the student in question above- from Georgia- would love to influence the election in a state where it’s close. McCain is at or above 55% in most polls.
Is this right?

Here’s what the ACLU says about this:
“Most people have one obvious primary address, and that’s where they register,” added Willis. “But college students, almost all of whom live in more than one place during the course of the year, must decide which address is their primary one. For many, it’s where they attend school—the place they call home for nine months out of the year.”
“While registrars should assist students who are uncertain about where they should register, no registrar should question students who make the choice to vote where they attend school,” said Willis.
So let me get this straight. A college student can decide to vote in either their home state or the state where they pay out-of-state tuition?
What is preventing the college students from voting both in their college state and in their “home” state? Ethical/legal vs. Machiavellian behavior? Supposedly some students attending college in Ohio were heard bragging about also voting in their “home” state ALSO–this during the 1990 Bush-Gore Election.
